USO AND MAF HIT A HOME RUN!
Once again the partnership between the USO New England Council and the Masonic Angel Foundation has “clicked” to help children of our men and women in uniform.
Last week, Foundation volunteers were approached by Ms. Alice Harkins, Executive Director at the USO New England Council regarding “opening day” at Fenway Park. The USO had secured tickets to opening day and was putting together a “kids’ outing” for approximately forty children of area military personnel.
As usual, Alice had all her ducks in a row. She had the tickets in hand and was trying to arrange transportation. A bus company had agreed to reduce their normal charter rate of approximately $800 to a little less than $250.
The USO approached the MAF for funding of the reduced bus fare. Thanks once again to the generosity of The Lodge of St. Andrew, we were happy to send Ms. Harkins a check from the St. Andrew Fund within thirty minutes of receiving the call from USO Board member and Mount Lebanon Lodge member Bro. Bob Shaughnessey.
Below are some words from Alice Harkins, USO Executive Director...
Military children who have a parent serving in the Gulf, were the Guests of Honor for Opening Day with the Red Sox. The "kids" were treated to a reception, game day hats, shirts, tote bag filled with goodies and photos with the players. They were also escorted onto the field by Red Sox Legends for the opening ceremonies. Transportation to this very VIP Day for military children was sponsored by the Masonic Angel Foundation, Thank you again for helping to bring smiles, and lifetime memories to some very special children.
Alice Harkins, Executive Director
As you can see by the smiles on the youngsters’ faces, the day was a runaway success!
Regards to all,
Robert W. Fellows, Board Secretary
